HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY—or HCM for short—causes parts of your heart muscle to thicken, or hypertrophy. It’s not an uncommon condition. Approximately one in 500 people develop it, according to the American Heart Association. Not everyone who gets HCM will be bothered by symptoms, but for some it can be life-threatening. “There’s a very broad spectrum of how it presents,” says cardiologist Robert Myerburg, M.D., a professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Florida.
